Our History
Garden State Growers finds its roots in Pachysandra, literally.
Origin
In the late 1970s, a group of innovative brothers decided to start taking cuttings of Pachysandra from their neighbors’ yard and root them in containers. Once rooted, they would bring them to market in the back of their father’s station wagon. After a few years of peddling pachysandra, a decision was made to purchase a piece of land in central NJ and construction began. The first greenhouses were made from heat pipes and 4x4s, but eventually, those greenhouses were replaced with state-of-the-art glass and plastic greenhouses which we still use today.
Today
Garden State Grower’s flagship location is still located in Pittstown NJ, but has since expanded to a location in eastern PA and a location in northern NJ. We currently grow in 46 acres of climate-controlled greenhouses and over 100 acres of outdoor field production. What started as strictly a pachysandra growing operation has now turned into a greenhouse that grows hundreds of different varieties of annuals, perennials, and houseplants. A portion of the plants sold by Garden State Growers are sourced from growers in the Southern U.S.A. because of the favorable climate there for growing plants in the early spring season.
Our Goals
Our business model is focused on supplying Big Box Retailers with top-quality plants each season at competitive prices. Although we produce millions of plants each year, we grow and sell our plants the same way a customer purchases them, “One plant at a time”. Living by this rule ensures that our entire team, from production to growing to shipping, treats each plant as something that will eventually help beautify a customer’s home.
